Thailand - general information

Thailand has a population of about 65 million people and riches nearly the size of France. The word Thailand translated means land of the free men. The Thais are very proud that they have never been colonized. A special part for the integration of the nation plays the king which is highest esteemed and loved by his subjects. It is a good advice to not criticize him or a member of his family.
90% of the Thais are Buddhists and the religion influxes much the daily rhythm of life. The monks have a special status and are much respected. For females (adults and children) it is forbidden to touch them. On visits at temples cloths that cover knees an shoulders are regulation. The shoes have to be removed before entering. There is no restriction at taking photos inside a temple or photographing a monk as long as this is done at a decent manner.
The head of humans is sacred as it is believed as the site of the human soul. Avoid touching adults as well as kids at the head. Loud argues at differences, call service staff by whistling or clapping the hands is impolite and pointing with the legs as other persons is a serious affront. Thais are general sensible against direct critic as this is completely controversy to their education. They estimate highly discretion, politeness and a bit of fun at any time. Table rules are easy and not very restrictive. Normally fork and spoon are used to eat. Meats are not necessary as food is cut to small bites.

Shopping in Phuket

Thailand is a paradise for shoppers. You can purchase cloths at measurement, beachwear, silk, jewelry, woodcarving, handicrafts ect. at very cheap prices. Bargain is a must (except the big shopping centers) and you should take time for it and not forget to smile. Behave of taxi drivers and touts who offer you to take you for free to shops. Usually you pay at this places more than twice as normal!

Tipping in Thailand

You are not obliged to tip in Thailand. But, if you are treated well a tip is appreciated. As a general rule if you hand 20 Baht to the porter, bus driver and waiters at normal restaurants you are right. At high class hotels and restaurants the average tip can double or triple. Room maids at hotels, receptionists and tour guides you can tip once a week or on departure. Many hotels have a common box for tips to make sure that the technique staff is not forgotten. Taxi driver are not tipped as they work on their own and as they deal about the price for the trip direct with you. If one of them ask you for a tip, you got a bad one already. Agree the price wit the taxi driver before you enter his car or you pay to much! And insist that he brings you to your destination without delivering you first to a jewelry or any similar establishment. The taxi drivers in Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya are not a honor for their nation and provoke a lot of bad will! In a serious confrontation it helps a lot to ask the driver to call the tourist police. There is few things that this guys fear more then a meeting with the police!

Phuket counts on hospitals that would be a pride for many European cities! Modern technique, doctors that have studied at Europe or USA and a service that looks more like a luxury hotel than an hospital. The in Europe or USA usual medicines are available at any pharmacy. If you need any special medication bring it anyway with you.
